"Ways of Seeing China" cinema series organized at ISCTE Lisbon
8 March 2024
To celebrate the entry into the Chinese New Year of the Dragon, the AspirE team based in Lisbon organized a series of film screenings titled "Ways of seeing China" at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon. Sessions took place on February 15, 22 and 29 and were open to the wide public.
The films curated and facilitated by AspirE postdoc film maker Amaya Sumpsi reflect varying experiences of Asian migrants in Portugal and reveal many of the complexities and contradictions of today's China. Topics ranged from the daily life of the Chinese community living in Portugal to LGBTQI+ experiences of marginalization and stigma, strong family culture and filial piety in China as well as stories of heritage and identity of the Chinese diaspora. Each screening was followed by lively and engaged discussions between the film makers, invited experts and the audience. More information is available at https://cies.iscte-iul.pt/np4EN/4074.html
The cinema series culminated with a Chinese celebration arranged by AspirE researcher Carol Wang: a mesmerizing dragon dance and a trumpet ballad accompanied by endearing dancing moves performed by members of the Chinese community in Lisbon - take a look at these celebrations HERE.
