Presentation at the 19th Deutschsprachiger Japanologentag

22 August 2025

Ruth Achenbach (local Principal Investigator based at Goethe University Frankfurt) delivered a presentation titled “Career changes of highly skilled migrants in Japan and Germany – agency in liberalizing immigration regimes and changing labor markets”  at the 19th Deutschsprachiger Japanologentag, the most important Japanology conference in German-speaking countries, held every three years.

The talk compared the career strategies of highly educated Japanese migrants in Germany with those of Chinese top-level graduates in Tokyo, shedding light on how migrants navigate shifting labor markets and evolving immigration regimes.

This presentation contributed to international academic discussions on migration, labour, and mobility, situating AspirE’s research within broader debates on career-making and agency in transnational contexts!
