Bloody berry - documentary

27 November 2023

Some Thai migrant workers arrive in Finland with high hopes, often taking on debt to cover their travel costs, believing the seasonal berry-picking jobs will secure a better financial future. However, many are met with a stark reality that falls short of these expectations, leaving them with only modest earnings and a heavy burden of debt.

Since 2006, a collaborative program between Thailand and Finland has allowed workers, particularly from Thailand’s Isaan region, to participate in Finland’s 70-day wild berry harvesting season. For some, this opportunity has proven profitable, and they return annually, aiming to improve their lives and provide stability for their families.

Yet, as The Isaan Record reveals, not all stories from Finland’s forests end in success. Many who embark on these journeys return home disappointed, seeking justice for the financial strain they endured in pursuit of a livelihood that didn’t live up to the promises.
