The Thai Berry Pickers in Finland

Author(s): Kwanchanok Jaisuekun

Published on 15 May 2024

This essay sheds light on the phenomenon of Thai berry pickers, also known as "blood berries" in the media, and brings it to the public's attention. These workers, mostly from the northeastern region of Thailand, are independent workers in the agricultural sector and travel to Finland from July to October to pick wild berries.

The essay highlights the vulnerability of Thai labor in the Finnish berry industry, which is not protected by Finnish labor laws due to its non-employee status. The author calls for authorities to take action and improve the situation for the Thai berry pickers.
