AspirE featured on the ULB website
19 January 2026
We are excited to share that the AspirE project has been featured in the news section of the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) website, highlighting the significance and impact of our research for both the academic community and beyond.
Funded by the Horizon Europe programme and coordinated by ULB, AspirE has been studying the migration decisions of people from East and Southeast Asia to Europe for the past three years. With 850 collected narratives across 11 countries, the project offers a fresh perspective on the human drivers of mobility: beyond complex political and institutional frameworks, it is personal dimensions (family, social networks, life aspirations) that shape migration decisions.
The article emphasises that:
-
European migration policies, while influential, are not the sole factor guiding migrants’ choices.
-
Personal networks and family considerations play a central role in realising migration projects.
-
Our research methodology, including in-depth interviews, video diaries, and collaborative approaches, provides a rich, human-centered understanding of contemporary migration dynamics.
Being featured on the ULB news portal showcases not only the scientific excellence of AspirE but also its potential to inform public debates and policy discussions on migration between Asia and the European Union.
